Concept

A sweet bed time story.

Synopsis

A kid goes every night to the attic of his house in order to read a bed time story to his mysterious friend.

Premise

Little Tom’s best time of the day, is nightfall. When night comes, he ascends the old staircase of his house and enters the dusty attic. There, between books and old furniture, lives his small wooden friend, a little toy-owl who loves listening to bed time stories. When Tom enters the attic and opens the fairy tale book, the little owl steps out of her hiding place and comes close to the little boy in order to listen to his stories and go to sleep with his company.

Planning the action

The film was designed to be a hybrid animation film, with the mixture of Live Action footage and 3D animation elements and Cg Effects. For this reason, all the 3D production needed to be planed very carefully step by step, after the live action footage was filmed in a green room stage. The character should fit perfectly in the real world, in concept, size, texture and light.

3D Modelling

The 3D model of the character was created in Autodesk Maya 2015, with attention to detail, following precisely the character design model sheet that we created during the pre-production stage.

Character Concept Art & Design

Description

This is a 3D animation and live action project, sponsored by Bournemouth University and directed by E. Subero. In this project our role and responsibility was the Creation of sketches, storyboards and concepts for the 3d character of the animation piece, based on the story ideas of all the members of the production team. The second task was the creation of the 3d model of the character in Autodesk Maya 2015, based on the orthographic and sketches created by us in the previous phase of the production.

The 3D character

A lot of character designs and concepts were created for the main 3D character of the story. At first the focus of the production team was centered on creating a realistic, monster – looking character that would live in the attic of the house. This is the reason why the name that this film was given was Dokebi, which in Korean Language means Monster. But there are a lot of questions about the character that remained unanswered. And for some reason none of the monster – like concepts seemed to fit to the story very well.

For this reason another character concept came to surface. A character that is toy-like and not fully realistic. Maybe it would be possible and reasonable for an old toy to live in the attic of a house (much more than a realistic dragon anyway). The final idea of the concept of the character and its character design, came to us in a period of real pressure, when the deadlines were approaching and still a character that would fit perfectly in the story was nowhere to be found. Then we thought that maybe a cute small toy-like owl character would fit perfectly. Owls are known to be very clever animals and in most countries they are considered as the symbol of wisdom and learning. So, this cute little owl became our main character for the story, and all the production team was really happy about the idea and the final concepts of the character.
