Concept

We, ourselves, define time.

Synopsis

Ora, is a young ballerina, who has a very weird relationship with time. For her, the big clock that she is staring every-day on the walls of the theater is the ruler not only of her dance, but of her life as well. Only when the clock stops, does she realize that clocks cannot define time, we are.

Premise

Ora, our main character, is a talented ballet dancer. Every day for Ora is pretty much the same. The same routine over and over again, faster and faster, the same steps that seem to go nowhere, the same clock on the theater’s wall ruling her whole life. One day, as Ora was doing her routine, the clock breaks. Ora, desperately looks at the pieces of the broken clock, without knowing how she would continue her practice without it. While she was crying above the clock’s pieces, the gears of the clock become alive and suddenly Ora enters the world of time. Ora starts to run as fast as she can, with her body stiff as wood from anxiety and fear, in order to escape from the monster of TIME that is after her. But when she turns back in order to see the monster’s face, she sees nothing else but a monster wearing her own face. Only then does she understand that it is not that monster to blame for her anxiety and fear of time, but herself. She is the one who created the stress in her mind. After cutting the ropes and connections with her old self, she starts to live a life in which she is able to define her time and how she wants to live every moment.

Telling a story about Time

TIME’s journey in animation begun in April 2010, when Elpida Panourgia, its director, decided to make a 2d short film in order to tell a story about her greatest fear, TIME. The story of the animation does a big cycle starting in the present, going to the past and ending to the present again, like the rotation of a clockwise. The story unfolds with the help of a gear, a part of a clock that breaks due to its working overload. Like human beings actually “break” due to anxiety and the crazy dancing rhythm of their everyday lives. Time becomes a living nightmare and a villain at the same time, a nonsensical world in space but also a living, scaring, monstrous being that drains a human’s happiness and liveliness. Anxiety transforms humans’ souls and bodies to stiff, wooden puppets. But is TIME the real enemy that people should fear, or is it their own self that actually hides beneath that fearful creature? Only when people realize that this fear is actually created inside their minds, they can become friends with time and are able to treasure every moment of their lives.
